If you are planning a Maldives trip from China and researching in English, clear four practical frictions before you enquire: how you will pay, which messaging apps hotels actually use, how your phone will work on the atolls, and whether your Malé (MLE) arrival leaves daylight for a seaplane. Entry itself is usually straightforward for leisure travel (see visa notes below and our full entry guide), but the trip still fails when cards decline, WhatsApp was never installed, or a late landing misses the last seaplane of the day.
Use this checklist, then share month, party size, and resort-vs-local preference via enquiry or WhatsApp.
| Who this is for | Travellers from China planning in EN (ZH content later) |
|---|---|
| Biggest frictions | Overseas card behaviour, WeChat vs WhatsApp, SIM/eSIM, seaplane daylight after long-haul |
| Entry | China-Maldives mutual visa exemption commonly covers ordinary passports for short tourist stays (often cited as up to 30 days); Maldives also grants tourist visa on arrival when entry checks are met. Always re-check official sources. Free IMUGA Traveller Declaration still required |
| Currency on island | USD and property billing currency are the practical defaults; RMB is not a reliable everyday tender |
| Payments trend | UnionPay, Weixin Pay, and Alipay acceptance is expanding via Bank of Maldives / Visit Maldives partnerships; still merchant-by-merchant, not universal |
What should I confirm before I enquire?
Bring these five points to the first message. They let us shape islands and transfers without a long back-and-forth:
- Travel month and nights (a flexible window of a few days helps when seaplane or domestic links matter).
- Party size and ages (couples, multi-gen families, and dive groups fit different islands).
- Resort, local-island guesthouse, or split stay energy.
- Must-dos: quiet beach, house reef, diving, or whale sharks (see our South Ari whale shark season guide and Dhigurah local-island guide).
- Flight idea into Malé (MLE): city of departure, overnight vs daytime arrival, so we can flag same-day seaplane risk early.
If you already have preferred hotel brands or a budget band, mention them in the enquiry so we can match options.
Do Chinese passport holders need a visa for the Maldives?
For ordinary leisure travel, you normally do not apply for a tourist visa in advance.
Two official frames matter, and both point the same practical way for most holiday trips:
- China-Maldives mutual visa exemption: Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs and China’s published exemption lists describe mutual visa exemption for qualifying nationals, commonly for stays up to 30 days on ordinary passports. Confirm the current wording on official MFA / Immigration pages before you fly; agreements can be updated.
- Maldives Immigration general rule: a tourist visa on arrival is granted when you meet entry checks (machine-readable passport with enough validity, return/onward ticket, prepaid booking at a registered place to stay, sufficient funds if asked). Officers decide admissibility at the airport.
Still mandatory for every foreign arrival: the free IMUGA Traveller Declaration, submitted on the official portal within 96 hours before arrival. Children need their own passport and their own declaration.

How do payments usually work for guests from China?

Plan for international cards + a USD cash backup. Do not assume every shop, jetty café, or guesthouse will take the same wallet you use at home.
Cards
- Resorts and larger merchants commonly take major international cards (Visa / Mastercard are the everyday baseline; UnionPay is widely supported on Bank of Maldives merchant rails, but ask your specific property before you travel).
- Tell your Chinese bank you will be overseas; some debit products block foreign transactions unless you enable them. Carry a second card from a different network if you can.
- Hotel deposits and spa / water-sports extras are often card-based. Keep SMS or app alerts working for one-time passcodes.
Weixin Pay / Alipay
- Visit Maldives and Bank of Maldives have publicly pushed Weixin Pay (WeChat Pay) and Alipay / Alipay+ acceptance to make Chinese guest checkout easier, including airport and resort pilots that have been expanding.
- Treat this as a growing convenience, not a guarantee. Acceptance is merchant-specific. Your favourite café on a small local island may still want USD cash or a Visa tap. Ask the property when you confirm the booking.
Cash
- USD in small, clean notes remains the most useful cash backup for tips, small local shops, and moments when terminals are offline.
- Maldivian rufiyaa appears in Malé and some local shops; resorts often quote and settle extras in USD.
- RMB cash is not a practical default on island. Exchange only through reputable channels if you must; do not rely on it.

Which apps should I install before I fly?
WhatsApp is the working language of Maldives tourism ops. Transfer desks, guesthouses, dive centres, and agents routinely coordinate arrival times and jetty changes on WhatsApp. Install it on a number you can receive SMS on, log in, and send a test message before you leave China.
WeChat stays useful for family chat at home and for the growing set of merchants that take Weixin Pay. It is not a full substitute for WhatsApp when you need the boat crew at 06:30.
Practical setup many China-outbound guests use:
- Keep the China SIM active (or reachable) for WeChat / banking SMS where needed.
- Use Maldives data (local SIM, eSIM, or resort Wi‑Fi) for WhatsApp voice/video and maps.
- Download offline maps for Malé / Hulhumalé and your atoll if you will hop islands.
- Pack an offline EN↔ZH translation pack for menus, pharmacy labels, and jetty signs on local islands. Mandarin staffing is strong at some China-facing resorts and uneven on smaller guesthouse islands.
Email still matters for vouchers and e-tickets. Screenshot confirmations so you are not stuck if airport Wi‑Fi is slow.
How should I handle SIM, eSIM, and roaming?

The Maldives has two main operators: Dhiraagu and Ooredoo. Both sell tourist SIM / eSIM products; airport desks at Velana (MLE) are the usual on-arrival option, and both also offer online eSIM purchase with passport verification. Coverage across inhabited islands is generally solid on 4G; remote sandbanks and open-ocean crossings still drop out.
Practical options
- China carrier roaming: simplest if your plan includes Maldives data and the cost is acceptable. Confirm Maldives is in the roaming zone and that data roaming is switched on before pushback.
- Travel eSIM bought before departure: useful if your phone supports eSIM and you want data the moment you land (helps WhatsApp the transfer team while you wait for bags).
- Local tourist SIM / eSIM at MLE: passport registration required; compare current Dhiraagu vs Ooredoo tourist packs on the day (data allowances change).
Dual-SIM tip: many travellers keep the Chinese number alive for banking and WeChat verification while routing mobile data through the Maldives line. Resort WiFi varies from excellent to lobby only; do not bet a same-day seaplane coordination solely on hotel Wi‑Fi.
Tourist SIM prices change often, so check Dhiraagu or Ooredoo online, or the airport counter, for the current plan on the day you buy.
How do transfers affect a China-origin itinerary?
China-MLE flights are long (direct examples in recent schedules include routes from cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, and Chengdu, plus many one-stop options via Gulf or regional hubs). Schedules change by season; verify your ticket, not a blog table.
What matters for island logistics:
- Seaplanes fly in daylight only. Operators and resorts commonly need your international flight to land at MLE by roughly mid-afternoon (many properties cite windows around 15:00, sometimes to about 15:30) so immigration, bags, and the seaplane terminal transfer still fit before dark. Exact cut-offs are resort- and operator-specific.
- Build buffer, not a heroic connection. After a long overnight from China, immigration queues and tired kids add time. If you land late, plan a Malé / Hulhumalé overnight and a morning seaplane rather than gambling the last slot.
- Speedboats to nearby North / South Malé and some Ari properties can run later when the resort confirms your flight, subject to sea state. They are often the kinder same-day option after an evening arrival.
- Domestic flight + speedboat serves some far atolls on a schedule of its own; late international arrivals can miss the last domestic link.
Soft bags matter for seaplane weight limits (operators often quote around 20 kg checked plus a small cabin allowance; confirm with your resort). Hard-shell oversized cases are a common friction point.
When you enquire, paste your proposed inbound flight number and landing time. We will say honestly whether same-day seaplane is realistic or whether a speedboat island / overnight buffer is safer.
Resort, local island, or split stay: how should guests from China choose?
Resort if you want a private-island bubble, kids’ clubs, predictable dining, and on-site water sports. Mandarin-speaking hosts appear more often at China-facing resorts, but English remains the operational default almost everywhere tourist-facing.
Local island (guesthouse) if you want village streets, cafés, and shorter transfers near Mal, or wildlife bases such as Dhigurah for South Ari whale-shark access. Alcohol is generally not served in the community; dress modestly away from designated tourist beaches. See the Dhigurah guide if whale sharks are the priority.
Split stay (for example local island + resort finale, or Kaafu + South Ari) works well for multi-gen groups with mixed expectations. It adds one transfer day; say so early so we sequence boats and flights sanely.
Local-island etiquette in one minute
- Cover shoulders and knees in village streets and near mosques; save swimwear for designated tourist / bikini beaches.
- Do not import alcohol. Licensed resorts may serve on property; inhabited local islands generally do not.
- Friday is the main prayer day; some services run differently.
- Ask before photographing people, and follow marine-life codes on snorkel trips (no touching whale sharks or turtles).
More detail sits in the etiquette section of our entry and visa guide.
FAQ
Is English enough if I am travelling from China?
Yes in most tourist-facing resorts, dive centres, and Malé services. Mandarin coverage is uneven on smaller local islands. Offline translation plus clear WhatsApp messages in simple English works well.
Can I pay for everything in RMB on the island?
Usually no. Plan international cards (and UnionPay where accepted), optional Weixin Pay / Alipay where the merchant supports them, and a USD cash backup.
Do I still need IMUGA if China and the Maldives have a visa exemption?
Yes. The Traveller Declaration is separate from the visa decision. Submit it free on the official IMUGA portal within 96 hours of arrival.
Will WeChat alone be enough to reach my hotel?
Risky. Install and test WhatsApp before you fly. Keep WeChat for home contacts and for merchants that take Weixin Pay.
What if my flight from China lands after seaplane hours?
Expect an overnight near the airport or a property reachable by speedboat, then continue next morning. Tell us the landing time when you enquire so we do not sell you an impossible same-day seaplane.
How do I get a quote?
Send your month, party size, inbound city, and whether you lean resort, local-island, or split via enquiry or WhatsApp. We reply with options privately.
