Do I need a visa before flying to the Maldives?
For standard tourism, no. Maldives Immigration states that a tourist visa is granted on arrival and that tourists do not require pre-approval for that visa. You still must satisfy entry requirements at the airport. A complete itinerary does not guarantee entry; Immigration officers decide admissibility at the port of entry.
Note (nationality restriction): Immigration has published that, effective 15 April 2025, entry will not be granted on Israeli passports. If this may affect you, confirm directly with Maldives Immigration before planning travel.
What documents do I need at Malé (MLE)?
Bring (and be ready to show):
- Passport with MRZ and at least one month’s validity remaining (Immigration also warns that passports relying on extended validity stamps are not accepted).
- Confirmed return or onward ticket, plus proof you can enter your next country if you are not going home.
- Prepaid confirmed booking at a registered hotel, resort, or guesthouse (or an approved sponsorship arrangement).
- Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay, if asked.
- Your completed IMUGA Traveller Declaration (see below).
- A yellow fever vaccination certificate, only if it applies to your routing.
Airline check-in staff sometimes ask for the declaration or booking proof before boarding. Keep digital copies offline as well as online.
How does the IMUGA Traveller Declaration work?
All foreign arrivals must submit the Traveller Declaration electronically.
- When: Up to 96 hours (4 days) before arrival (not the older “72 hours” wording you may still see on outdated blogs).
- Where: Official portal only – imuga.immigration.gov.mv.
- Cost: Free on the official site. Avoid third-party sites that charge for the same form.
- Who: Each traveller, including children, needs their own submission.
- At arrival: Present the completed declaration (commonly as a QR / confirmation) when Immigration asks.
If the portal is down or your details change (flight or hotel), update via the official IMUGA channels and keep your latest confirmation.
Is yellow fever vaccination required?
Only when it applies to your journey. Maldives Immigration requires a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate if you are arriving from, or have recently travelled through, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Children under one year are exempt under Immigration’s published wording.
If you are unsure whether your routing counts, check:

- Your airline
- A yellow-fever endemic-country list from a recognised health authority (e.g. WHO / your national travel health service)
Do not assume “no jab needed” solely because you live in Europe, the UK, Russia, or the Gulf if you transited a risk country on the way.
What about alcohol, dress, and local islands?
Entry rules and island etiquette often get mixed up. Keep them separate:
- Import rules: Alcohol is a prohibited import for travellers. Do not pack bottles in checked or hand luggage.
- Resorts: Licensed private resort islands may serve alcohol to guests on property. Do not take alcohol off the resort.
- Local (inhabited) islands: Expect no alcohol service in the community. Dress modestly away from the beach (shoulders and thighs covered is a safe default). Friday prayers and local customs deserve quiet respect.
- Pork and other restricted items: Resorts may serve pork under licence; importing restricted goods is a separate customs matter – when unsure, leave it out of your luggage.
If your trip mixes a local-island guesthouse with a resort night or two, plan alcohol expectations by island type, not by “Maldives in general.”
How long can I stay, and can I extend?
Tourist permission on arrival is commonly described as up to 30 days. Extensions and longer stays follow Immigration processes and are not automatic. For the current extension path, length limits, and fees, use official Immigration / IMUGA guidance rather than travel blogs.
What if I am only transiting Malé?
Transit without immigration clearance is treated differently from entering the country as a tourist. If you will clear immigration, collect bags, or leave the airside area, assume full entry rules (including the Traveller Declaration) apply. Confirm with your airline and Maldives Immigration for your exact connection type.

Is the Traveller Declaration the same as a visa?
No. The declaration is a mandatory arrival form. The tourist visa decision still happens with Immigration on arrival.
Is IMUGA really free?
Yes, when you use the official IMUGA portal. Paid “visa agent” mirrors are unnecessary for the standard tourist declaration.
How much passport validity do I need?
Immigration currently states at least one month. Many travellers still prefer three or six months as a personal buffer for airlines and onward countries – but the official Maldives figure to cite is Immigration’s own.
Do I need travel insurance?
Not listed as a universal Immigration entry document in the same way as passport and booking, but it is strongly advisable for medical evacuation and dive/snorkel cover. Ask your insurer what Maldives treatment and evacuation actually includes.
