Getting Around the Maldives: Seaplane vs Speedboat Transfers
The Maldives is an archipelago of over 1,000 islands, and getting from the main international airport to your resort or guesthouse involves a transfer. There are two main options: speedboat and seaplane. Each suits different locations and budgets. Understanding the differences will help you choose the right transfer for your trip.
Speedboat Transfers
Speedboats are used for resorts and guesthouses within roughly 50 kilometers of Malé. Travel time ranges from 15 minutes to 2 hours. Speedboat transfers are generally cheaper than seaplanes, and they operate from the main jetty at the airport. They can run in most weather conditions, though rough seas may cause delays. Speedboats are a good choice for those who prefer a direct, ground-level experience.
Seaplane Transfers
Seaplanes, operated by companies like Trans Maldivian Airways, are used for resorts and guesthouses farther from Malé (up to 200 kilometers). Flights take 25 to 60 minutes and offer stunning aerial views of the atolls. Seaplanes are more expensive but can be a memorable part of your holiday. They only operate during daylight hours (typically until 4 PM), so if your flight arrives late, you may need to stay overnight in Malé or take a speedboat to a nearby island.
How to Choose
Consider your budget, the location of your accommodation, and your arrival time. If you’re staying at a resort far from the airport, a seaplane is often the only practical option. For closer islands, a speedboat is efficient and cost-effective. Contact us for advice on the best transfer for your itinerary.
